Heriot Watt University chooses Oracle Cloud as the platform for its innovative research.

The multiphase and biological flows research group at Heriot-Watt University received OCRE cloud funding for their healthcare application research. Using the OCRE framework mini competition mechanism, they selected Quistor and Oracle Cloud Infrastructure as their cloud platform.

The Challenge

Led by Principal Investigator Ali Ozel, with support from Josh Williams, Jose Manuel Menendez Montes, and Uwe Wolfram, the team harnessed the power of cloud computing to model aerosol drug deposition in patient lung airways.

This complex particle modeling required the scalability and compute power of the cloud. They sought a modern, high-performance cloud that supported AI/ML tools and analytics, while also being user-friendly and cost-effective for their 2 million CPU hours research project.

Additionally, they prioritized a cloud-neutral technology stack to ensure open-source compatibility and minimize cloud lock-in. The Quistor service fulfilled their need for a technically flexible and scalable computational platform.
